review: the dark days club

The Dark Days Club // Alison Goodman

Synopsis:

“London, April 1812. On the eve of eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall’s presentation to the queen, one of her family’s housemaids disappears-and Helen is drawn into the shadows of Regency London. There, she meets Lord Carlston, one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of demons infiltrating every level of society. Dare she ask for his help, when his reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes? And will her intelligence and headstrong curiosity wind up leading them into a death trap?” [Goodreads]

I have to admit, it took about 150 pages for me to get into this book, but after that I was hooked! In some ways, this did feel a bit similar to Cassandra Clare’s, The Infernal Devices but Alison Goodman brings so many different elements to the novel that the plot sets an entirely different atmosphere as well.

As young Lady Helen Wrexhall is about to make her debut into society, of course strange events begin to occur. Instead of ignoring the crisis, Lady Helen then becomes determined to dig deeper into the shroud of mystery surrounding her.

I think I was the only one that was skeptical of Darby and to be honest, I was half expecting her to betray Helen. By the end of the novel, Darby became one of my favourite characters and I loved the relationship between Helen and her maid. The awesome friendships throughout the novel as well as the almost-but-not-quite romance definitely made this an intriguing and extremely fun read!

(I am completely 100% team Helen & Carlston and Darby & Quinn LOL)

The amount of research Goodman did with this book was evident from the very first page and overall, I loved this book! I can’t wait for the next one 🙂

My rating : 4 of 5 stars (80%)
